Repairing the Headliner

This post was published more than a few years ago (on 2006-06-17) and may contain inaccurate technical information, outmoded thoughts, or cringe takes. Proceed at your own risk.

The headliner in my '95 Saturn had started to fall, the fabric peeling away from the foam backing, and hanging down until finally, it was obstructing most of the view out the rear window. I had been just putting up with it, but when Reb wen out this morning, and had the kids holding it up for her, something had to be done.

I actually bought some adhesive a couple of weeks ago, but just went out and finally tried to glue it back up (against the advice of practically all the automotive websites out there). So, after a half-hour's work, 3M Super 77 Multpurpose Adhesive spray and some brass tacks to secure the now ill-fitting trailing edge, things seem to be back in reasonable shape, if slightly less pretty than before.

Any bets how long that's going to last? I'm putting my money on a month before I break down and take it someplace where they'll replace it for real.

Update:

It seems the foam underneath the fabric is deteriorating, so the fabric, plus the thin layer of foam particles it was re-glued to fell down again the very next day. Thankfully, the brass tacks held, and so now at least the liner isn't obscuring the rear view. Yay!
