Testing out Markdown

This post was published more than a few years ago (on 2008-01-04) and may contain inaccurate technical information, outmoded thoughts, or cringe takes. Proceed at your own risk.

I've known about Markdown for quite some time, but for some reason, I've always just stuck with writing up my posts in plain ol' HTML. Since I'm trying out MarsEdit, and it has preview functionality for Markdown, I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm all for the human-readability of it, and if I can just find a cheat sheet I can stand, I'll be home free. It looks like Ollieman had the best one, but his site is currently down. Perhaps I'll end up making my own.

PS: I really like the ability to create the links in "reference-style", and just dump them all at the bottom of the post like so many footnotes. So much more readable.

PPS: It seems that maybe there's a bug in the WordPress Markdown plugin, as when I do a reference style link that includes a link title, it doesn't parse it as a link. (If you see brackets and a definition below, then it's still not working.)

PPPS: What the hell happened to my preview pane in WordPress' "write" page? I can't see the post I'm editing anymore. Oh well, all the more reason to start using MarsEdit.

PPPPS: Updated to the PHP Markdown Extra plugin from Michel Fortin, and now all is well with the link title bug in the earlier version, plus I gained some snazzy new features.
