Tampopo, 1985 – ★★★★★

By about 15 minutes in, I was completely in love with this movie. A subject near and dear to my heart, approached with reverence, love, and craftsmanship. It fits well into my love of movies that have “competent people being competent” at their jobs, but in this case it’s the backstory leading up to achieving that competence. It’s a 1980s ramen movie with a training montage, and a helpful stranger who wanders into town, wearing a fedora, who helps the townspeople (Tampopo) overcome their enemy (sucky ramen). What else could one want?
