I’ve always been fascinated by technology, and tried to use it as a tool to make my life better, and as I grew as a person, to better the lives of others. That’s the way I like to look at the world. A rising tide lifts all boats, and all that. No surprise that people whose outlook is zero sum — that their lives cannot be better without making the lives of others worse, are also interested in using technology to do so.
Can I live in this world without interacting with services provided by the latter type of people? No. They own so many of the things that are required to live in society, if I don’t wish to become a hermit in the mountains (and to be honest, I do not — I like cities!). But can I try to make choices, where possible, to not trade with companies that support such excusionist, queerphobic, racist, and even white supremacist policies? I sure can, and I will.
Every company that supports DHH and his Omarchy project, goes onto my list of companies to avoid when possible. Some are easier than others, but even with those whom I find difficult, I will make my displeasure known, and will work to try to make better choices in the future.
“There is no ethical consumption under capitalism,” to be sure. But I can try.
