Yes, former Senator Strom Thurmond has shuffled off this mortal coil. I don't think I have ever rejoiced in the death of a fellow human being, but for some inexplicable reason, while I was lying in bed, listening to the announcement on WTOP, I felt a great elation.
Maybe it's that in 1957 he performed the longest filibuster ever, against the Civil Rights Act. Maybe it's the fact that this geriatric, racist, sexist pig continuted to be elected over and over by the fine people of South Carolina, well after his last brain cells had left for a long vacation.
Whatever the reason, I have to admit, I was and am releived that this useless, backwards politician will finally have to be replaced with someone with at least slightly more progressive views. Now, all we need is to introduce term limits for Senators and Congressmen (say, 20 years?), and get Arlen "Magic Bullet" Specter out of there, and we'll be on our way.
