Station in the Metro

I remember… maybe… watching this once at someone else’s house, but perhaps not paying full attention. Of course, I was much younger then.

Now I look back on this as… well, a bit of harmless fun, though slow to start, got decent toward the end. It was fun seeing a younger Joey Pants with Anne Ramsey as his mom, and the kids, though annoying at first, became even somewhat charming after a while. The whole pirate thing was pretty fun, and— by golly, they saved the family home from the evil rich folks. What more can you ask for from a mid-80s film? 4 stars.

In some ways, yeah, a rip-off of Aliens, but this movie has the added element of trying to make you root for a murderer, and killing off just about everyone you might have a tiny amount of concern for before the end. The effects were decent, and Vil Deisel does have the creepy mirrored eyeballs, but it just doesn’t do it for me. Two stars.

I remembered this fondly from my high school days, but more remarkable now for the fact that the lead character, a high school cheerleader, was actually not in her mid-twenties when they filmed it. The effects range from hokey to ewwwwwww!!, and the cold war government conspiracy angle still plays pretty well.

All in all, a decent flick, and Frank Darabont co-wrote it, in an out-of-character turn away from Stephen King prison movies. Three stars.
